a and a

awkward:
--couldn't hear a single thing in my blood pressure lab.  tried three stethoscopes.  tried three people. tried the double head stethoscope so my instructor could listen with me. tried going really slow.  tried everything. then i got taken into another room so my ears could be checked out to make sure ear wax wasn't impeding my progression as a nurse. this was accompanied by "this is nothing to be embarrassed about, its totally natural." think again. what kind of nurse can't take blood pressure?
--"so sarah, what's your major?" hey awkward married man that i don't like sitting next to, notice i'm wearing scrubs with a patch that says BYU COLLEGE OF NURSING on my sleeve???...i'm an organ performance major...
--ripping my paper in half for a quiz, kid next to me already has his notebook out but then looks at me "umm so are we going to share? and i'll repay you next time?" married man strikes again. {this could be a 'had to be there' moment}
--overhearing an hour long extremely personal conversation that should never take place in a packed hallway
--falling asleep in physiology. every. single. class.
--the outfit i chose to run to the grocery store in. rainboots {no socks}, yoga pants, chad's shirt{size L}, texas sweatshirt, no makeup, no bra. don't know why i'm sharing this. it was a one time thing.
--oh sup ice two steps out the door at 7:30am. biffed it, cut open my hand, but was too preoccupied looking around to make sure nobody saw.  i think i was safe.
--sprouting potatoes

awesome:
--my new immersion blender. smoothies mmmm.
--i finally learned to take blood pressure...........................................
--tomatoes and mozzarella. i have missed you.
--the sweet single dad washing car windows at 11pm at walmart in his business clothes to earn money.  asked us if we could afford the $5 we gave him without washing our windows and he was so grateful.  just about broke my heart. sometimes i wish i had a lot of money just so i could give it away.
--wednesday temple nights with heather, evan, and kamille
--pinterest, obviously.
--old navy's new spring line. bye bye birthday money.
--came home from class and chad had bought the beautiful "pinteresting" table i wanted!!
--grapefruit
--being a part of a program in which the main theme is "learning the healers art." i'm so excited to be a nurse, a career solely dedicated to service and emulating christ

caught in the moment

one. my dad bought probably 10 nerf guns + accesories on craigslist which resulted in a 2 week long nerf fight
two. t-rey and bella were snuggly and theres nothing i love more
three. chad, derek, and i wrapped what felt like 500 dinosaurs.  thus the wrapping paper trail
four. annual gingerbread house competition with the spitzers.  i should have won.
five. dad was hesitant about  his ipad but quickly became obsessed. oh and he loves facebook.
six. we did a lot of driving back and forth between arlington and denton so chad entertained himself by driving like an old asian
seven. he is extremely anti-reading but give the boy a sports biography and it will never leave his side. who knew.
eight. oh you mean you don't find coke cans in your bath tub because your husband is an avid bather??
nine - eleven. byu bowl game with both of our families!
twelve - fourteen. babes for my nursing acceptance celebration
fifteen. bella is my biggest fan.
sixteen. family home evening with some of our favorite people, bret and terin, before they head back to buenos aires for a year!
seventeen. bunco party on NYE with friends and family.  chad won us $10 woop woop!

we loved being home for so long, it was our first christmas sharing families but we alternated three days with each family and it worked out perfectly! we ate lots of food that thankfully we didnt have to cook or pay for, saw movies, played games, watched lots of sports and republican debates, shopped, napped, read, but mostly spent time with family and it couldn't have been better! we can't wait to be home again.

ten things nineties kids will have to explain to their children

i thought these were hilarious and had to share!!

1. Topanga was at some point in human history considered not only a legitimate first name for a human being, but the kind of name that would inspire in malleable teenage boys a life-long infatuation. Topanga, in our day, was leading lady name-material. Topanga (pronounced Tah-payne-ga, for those who will have only ever seen in it written down) is the name of the quintessential girl-next-door who will live, along with Feeney, in our hearts forever.

2. At some point, we carried around little plastic eggs with tiny screens on them — in these screens lived our hearts, our pets, our raison d’etre, our very own Tamagotchi. We loved them, we listened to their tiny electronic screams of malnourishment, and we occasionally forgot to pick up their poop for long enough that they died a tortured, poop-filled death. They were perhaps our first foray into the life-consuming world of electronics and self-absorption, later to be fully manifested by Facebook.
3. The black Power Ranger was black and the yellow Power Ranger was Asian because…we were so completely ahead of our time and beyond the capacity to even think in terms of something as inconsequential as race that… uh… I don’t know. Casting directors were racist in the nineties.
4. Long before he was spending his days foisting his mediocre children on us, Will Smith was actually the perfect human specimen. He also undoubtedly holds some world record for saving the world the most times while simultaneously delivering flawless catchphrases and giving cool guy nods to the camera. The Men In Black rap song, at the time, was created and received by the public without the slightest trace of irony. Really. He was that good.
5. In some inevitable shift of the time-space continuum in which James Cameron continues to rob humanity of all that is good and sacred in this world, Fern Gully will be known as that movie that ripped off Avatar. It will be up to us to crusade for what is right. It is up to us to explain that Fern Gully was not only a predecessor to Avatar, but far better, in that it contained both Tim Curry as a singing pile of molasses and Robin Williams rapping about animal testing in the pharmaceutical industry. (As a side note, if you have not recently listened to the full lyrics of the “Batty Rap,” I recommend you do, as they are horrifying.)
6. A neighborhood boy who completely disregards your family and puts a ladder directly under the teenage girl’s window to climb up at his discretion is not only acceptable, it’s charming. It’s the kind of stuff that would make said family take the ladder boy under their wing and into their heart. The nineties were a simpler time, one where we didn’t have to worry about things like breaking and entering. Clarissa today would have steel bars on the inside of her window and her father would continually remind her that the next-door boy with his ladder and his touchy hands have no place in his household.
7. Though on the surface, they are the exact same thing in every conceivable way, whether you liked The Backstreet Boys or N*SYNC said more about your character than all of the terrible macaroni art you could ever make for your child psychologist. Essentially, liking *NSYNC meant you liked Justin Timberlake, as he was clearly the Seabiscuit in that race from the get-go. You even liked him with his terrible, icy-blond mini-fro. Liking the Backstreet Boys gave you a bit more of a cultured palate, as there was no clear Diana in those Supremes. Nick was kind of the wholesome, if northern-Florida-redneck safe choice (save for his humiliating younger brother, Aaron). Brian was the shy, sensitive type. AJ was the hottt, dangerous meth addict. Kevin Richardson was mute with sexy, sculpted facial hair. No one liked Howie. Choosing between the two groups was like choosing between two beloved children, but once that line was crossed–there was no going back.
8. “I wanna really really really wanna zig a zig ahh,” has a meaning, and all true nineties kids know it, but we must never share it. Like the Illuminati, it must remain between us, the keyholders. With great power comes great responsibility.
9. Lisa Frank is not the name of a woman, it is the name of a movement, a culture, a way of living. It is a theory, a concept, a belief in something greater than yourself. It is the belief that all girls are entitled to dolphins covered with rainbows, jewel-encrusted frogs, and unicorns in acid-trip colors hugging each other. It is the ideology that no notebook is complete until it literally hurts your eyes to look at from so much color saturation. It is the hope that no school supply, no matter how insignificant, will be left un-bedazzled. It is the knowledge that your eraser cap, and that of your granddaughter’s, and her granddaughter’s after her, will not be some boring little nub–it will be a diamond covered with butterflies in a rainbow of colors. It is the dream of a better tomorrow.
10. Incredibly depressing women in Indiana covered in cats and glass figurines they buy at The Hallmark Store used to troll the web 1.0 to invest thousands of dollars in tiny stuffed animals filled with plastic beans. That happened. Beanie Babies were not just significant, they were the first example most of us had of envy, greed, and wrath. If someone messed up that little heart-shaped Ty tag, so help you God, that was the end of whatever contact you had with that monster of a human being. That tag-less Beanie Baby was now trash, and you had to deal with the consequence. It was at that moment, that de-valued Beanie Baby moment, that most of us accepted the truth… we’ll never have nice things.

miracles

i don't remember when the idea first popped into my head, or when i first said it out loud, or when i started all the planning and researching, but for as long as i can remember it has been my dream to be a nurse.  it may have all started with grey's anatomy.  i was fascinated by the hospital environment, and the surgeries and medical conditions, and the idea of bettering others' lives.  that made we want to be a surgeon, and then i thought about how i didn't even want to finish high school, let alone college, and then medical school, and then internships and residency, and then fellowship.  so i decided nursing would be a much more reasonable idea.  and when i told anyone that i was planning on being a nurse, they said it completely fit my personality and they could totally see it.  done deal.

i probably spent hours researching the best nursing schools in the country, like it even made a difference because, lets get serious, i'm not planning on being the best nurse in the country.  and bottom line, by the end of my junior year i would decided that the only school i really wanted to go to was BYU anyway.  so then i spent time researching BYU's nursing school, and the prerequisites, and i read through the whole application, and all the required classes, and i wrote out all of the service i had done for my 5 year service list.  this was probably somewhere between my junior and senior years.  clearly i'm a bit of an anal perfectionist.

well i got into BYU in february of my senior year of high school and it was one of my happiest days.  but then i started college and i wasn't so happy as i watched my GPA drop lower, and lower.  let's face it, i was one of probably 300 other freshman who felt that reading for american heritage wasn't really necessary.  and i didn't actually need to go to the open lab to study for my weekly anatomy quizzes.  because i was the girl that got straight A's without studying ... in high school.  after that first semester i worked really hard to pull my grades back up, i retook classes, i studied constantly, i pulled all-nighters.

that brought me to this semester, the fateful semester i would apply to the nursing school.  i've been working hard to make sure that i had A's so that my GPA would be high enough.  and i calculated it with what i would have when i submitted my midterm grades and i was feeling pretty confident.  until i realized that i had been calculating it wrong and i would be nowhere close to that "magical" number, the one that would result in my acceptance.  thats where my breakdown came in.  why had i been working so hard for what i felt was a pretty righteous desire, only to fail?  why had i prayed that my last recommendation be turned in on time, the one from my headmaster at ISB who said "he didn't think he had received the email i sent him 10 days ago" 2 days before it was due, only to find out that on the very last possible day it actually had been turned in, if i wasn't actually going to be accepted?  why did i end up getting A's in all my classes, despite my lower 2nd midterms, if my GPA wasn't going to be high enough anyway?  why did none of my backup plans seem like they would work out? why after all the work i had done, would i have to repeat 3-5 classes to transfer to another school, the only possible plan i came up with that might have worked when i didn't get in?

remember d. todd christofferson's talk from april 2011 conference about the currant bush?

“How could you do this to me? I was making such wonderful growth. … And now you have cut me down. Every plant in the garden will look down on me. … How could you do this to me? I thought you were the gardener here.”
President Brown replied, “Look, little currant bush, I am the gardener here, and I know what I want you to be. I didn’t intend you to be a fruit tree or a shade tree. I want you to be a currant bush, and someday, little currant bush, when you are laden with fruit, you are going to say, ‘Thank you, Mr. Gardener, for loving me enough to cut me down.’”
i felt like a currant bush.

and the more i thought about it, i knew that the lord had a plan for me and if it wasn't BYU nursing then i would figure it out.

friday i was sitting on the couch watching tv, and i looked over and saw the little red message light flashing on my phone.  i had 3 emails and thought nothing of it until i opened my email and saw the one that said "winter 2012 nursing admissions notification." and i didn't want to open it.  but i did and the first word said "congratulations!" and then i had to keep reading.  and then i started crying.  and then i ran upstairs bawling and yelled to chad I GOT IN!!! and of course he didn't know what i was talking about because i wasn't supposed to find out until monday, and it was supposed to be a rejection letter, so he made me show it to him and sure enough it said "the college of nursing acceptance committee has voted to grant you acceptance to the program for winter 2012." on paper was it logical that i would get it? probably not.  but that email was just proof to me that heavenly father knew i needed to be a nurse.  and he knew i needed to be one now.  and i am so grateful for the little miracle i received because, after all, i've been planning on being a nurse for years now.

just a reminder to myself

10.19.2011

time.
it keeps moving, whether we can keep up or not.
whether we fall behind, waste it away, or use it...
it goes on.

we live our lives setting alarm clocks and looking at our watches.
running from this place to that,
crossing off to do lists and calendars,
setting appointments and missing deadlines,
forgetting about birthdays and showing up early to meetings.

our lives are driven by time.
it's an extraordinarily important "thing" in our lives,
because we don't know when we will run out.
sometimes we don't know what to do with it, we have so much of it!
other times we don't know how we'll make it another minute,
knowing the heaps of things we have to do with too few hours to do it.

some of the time, is our happiest time.
our best moments.
even if for only a second.
he proposed, i said yes.
winning a race.
a smile.

some of the time, is our lowest time.
hours of pain.
disease.
heartache.
our darkest hours.
our saddest moments where we feel oh so alone.

but we're never alone.
time is on our side.
if we let it.

we love it,
we hate it.
we want it,
we need it.
we can't live without it.

time.
how do you spend it?
is what you're doing worth it?
do the hours you dedicate to certain tasks in your life
equate a certain level of importance to you?

time is what you make it.
it's all too easy to fill it up with meaningless things that leave us empty,
excess things that leave us overwhelmed,
or wonderful things that leave us fulfilled.

i am grateful to know that time is a precious gift,
and that each new day i can start fresh and try a little bit harder to use it
a little bit wiser.

be mindful of how you use it.
the clock is ticking.

i've realized

i've realized a lot of things recently.
i realized that i don't like coming up with ideas for dinner.
actually i don't really like making dinner, i would much rather bake treats to fatten up forever-skinny chad.
i realized that i can actually stand {and slightly enjoy} watching baseball, but only if it's the rangers in the playoffs.
i've realized who the people are in my life that matter most.

i've also realized recently that maybe blogging isn't my thing.
it's not for lack of trying, but i would much rather snuggle up with a blanket on the couch and
procrastinate homework by reading other people's blogs than update my own.
and my life has not been particularly inspiring lately.
but this post is for you, all 3 of my followers.
here's an update of the past four months.
maybe i'll get a second bloggy wind after the fate of my nursing future is decided on october 31.
{who decided that was a good day to break the news?}
portugal for a week in june with our best friends the moons, more here

in july we left our european adventure behind and moved back to texas
family reunion in august at bear lake, more here
so blessed to have so much family with me when i went through the temple in logan

and then on august 19th we finally decided to seal the deal

which was followed by a caribbean cruise, more here
in september my favorite girls convinced me that it would be a good idea to do a 10k mud run
and since then we've just been watching lots of football ... and studying.
